  1. Series of wars 1791-1802 between France and
  2. the combined armies of England, Austria,
  3. Prussia, and others, during the period of the
  4. French Revolution. 1791 Emperor Leopold II
  5. and Frederick William II of Prussia issued
  6. the Declaration of Pillnitz inviting the
  7. European powers to restore the French king
  8. Louis XVI to power. 1792 France declared war
  9. on Austria, who formed a coalition with
  10. Prussia, Sardinia, and (from 1793), Britain,
  11. Spain, and the Netherlands; victories for
  12. France at Valmy and Jemappes. 1793 French
  13. reverses until the reorganization by Lazare
  14. Carnot.
  15. 1795 Prussia, the Netherlands, and Spain made
  16. peace. 1796 Sardinia forced to make peace by
  17. the Italian campaign of Napoleon I, then a
  18. commander.
  19. 1797 Austria compelled to peace under the
  20. Treaty of Campo-Formio.
  21. 1798 Napoleon's fleet, after its capture of
  22. Malta, was defeated by the British admiral
  23. Nelson in Egypt at the Battle of the Nile
  24. (Aboukir Bay), and Napoleon had to return to
  25. France without his army; William Pitt the
  26. Younger, Britain's prime minister, organized
  27. a new coalition with Russia, Austria, Naples,
  28. Portugal, and Turkey. 1798-99 The coalition
  29. mounted its major campaign in Italy (under
  30. the Russian field marshal Suvorov), but
  31. dissension led to the withdrawal of Russia.
  32. 1799 Napoleon, on his return from Egypt,
  33. reorganized the French army.
  34. 1800 14 June Austrian army defeated by
  35. Napoleon at Marengo i n NW Italy, and again
  36. on 3 Dec (by Gen Moreau) at Hohenlinden near
  37. Munich.
  38. 1801 Austria made peace under the Treaty of
  39. Luneville; Sir Ralph Abercromby defeated the
  40. French army by land in Egypt a t the Battle
  41. of Alexandria, but was himself killed. 1802
  42. Peace of Amiens truce between France and
  43. Britain, followed by the Napoleonic Wars.
